Blog: Opportunities are out there according to Honours student Travan

It is a scary time for all university students at the moment, especially those who are approaching graduations. Some will miss out on a physical graduation ceremony, still receiving their degrees via mail after years of hard work. What students do after that fateful date is still very much up in the air, depending on the industry they are trying to enter.

If you are a communications student, it appears to be quite a tricky path. Internships are hard to get as everyone is now working from home and with all the staff cuts at newspapers and some networks, opportunities might be scarce.

Enter Vittorio Travan, a Charles Sturt University graduate currently completing his Honours in Exercise Science. Through hard work and a great skill for the art, Vittorio has gained the experience he needed to grasp opportunities once he graduates from university.

Travan said that he wasn’t really sure where he wanted to end up after completing much of his four year double degree.

“Finishing university, especially in those final couple of months, I wasn’t really sure where I wanted to end up or what type of organisation I wanted to be involved in,” Travan said.

“A few of the people I went through university with were very fortunate to land jobs straight out of school through internships. But for me I had different ideas of where I wanted to end.”

Travan stated that gaining experience and internships was important, however not knowing where you want to go is okay too.

“The internships I participated in really helped me understand the skills needed in journalism. Don’t be too afraid of going for a lofty internship at the NSW Waratahs or a radio station or paper. Just ask and the worst thing an organisation can say is no,” Travan said.

“If you don’t know where you want to end up, that’s totally fine. What I learnt is that through my internships you understand where you want to go. So try and enjoy a variety of internships and locations.”
