BLOG: Reading is fun

Are you like me and feel like you’ve watched everything that Netflix has to offer? It has gotten to the point where I have started watching Keeping Up with the Kardashians just so I can preoccupy myself whilst I am stuck at home… until recently. This week I have made it my mission to better myself, and I have started with an old habit of mine. And by old habit, I mean something I haven’t really done since I was eleven. This forgotten hobby of mine is reading before bed.

Reading has come back into my life and it has brought my inspiration and the will to get through this last little slog of uni before graduating. When I say I’m reading, I’m not talking about reading novels again like Harry Potter or A Series of Unfortunate events (both of which I frothed back in the day), no I’m reading biographies and true crime books now.

One book in particular that I really connected with was ‘Lawless’ by Kimberly Motley. This book is a memoir by Kimberly, who is an American defence lawyer who has been working in Afghanistan since 2007. In Afghanistan she has represented foreigners imprisoned in Afghani prisons, and has even represented Afghani women. She did this by getting a feel for how the law works in Afghanistan, going as far to use both the western system and the Quran in conjunction to defend her clients fairly and successfully. All of this has meant that she has earned the respect of many political leaders and the general population of Afghanistan, and has arguably done more for human rights in the country than any NGO has.

Certainly more exciting and inspiring then the activities of the Kardashian-Jenner crew.

So if you’re looking for something new to do during iso, pick up a book.
