Many people are used to seeing horse racing on their televisions at home or at the pub, but very few know what goes on behind the scenes.

Harness racing has always had a name for being a family sport. Local trainer and driver John O’Shea was born into the industry, with his father Jack training and driving horses throughout his childhood.

Bitten by the bug, John became horse crazy and has been involved in the industry all of his life.

One of the more recent changes he has noticed is the ‘after race life’ programs that are now available for horses.

There are numerous options for race horses now when they retire, which John likes. It’s nice to know that these animals who you get attached to can have a whole new life after racing.
